I have a few suggestions for you.
First I would look up the rule of thirds; or 2/3 composition.
Basically, imagine that the image is divided into 9 equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that the important elements are placed on those lines or intersections. Basically, in an image like this one where there is both scenery and a subject matter that you want to be noticed, it'd create more harmony and flow within the piece.
Also did you post this straight after scanning? Another suggestion of mine is to do a color adjustment so that the image doesn't look gray. If you have a computer capable of it I'd go look up gimp, or perhaps even use something like photobucket to make the image a bit brighter; as it was possibly intended to be.
